Tree Tracery

tree branches with sunset glow

Tree branches with sunset haze, Torr Alvie

Late afternoon on Torr Alvie, on a cold but beautifully sunny spring day.  I love the character of the old native Caledonian wood which cloaks the hill – it feels very special, with its mix of birch, juniper, beech and oak.

Birch and lichen

I love this characterful Birch and Juniper thick with lichen, although it looks better fullsize than email-size.  Full of tree-faces…

I’d been sitting for a while just enjoying the landscape, when the sunset seemed to come on with surprising speed.  I was hoping for a sunset view across the hills, but Torr Alvie keeps herself shrouded in trees and there is no view to the western side.  However, I loved these overlapping branches illuminated in the sunset haze.

I had pushed my bike up the steep path to the top, which made for a fantastic descent at sunset, startling the pheasants…

“The tree which moves some to tears of joy is in the eyes of others only a green thing that stands in the way.  Some see nature all ridicule and deformity… and some scarce see nature at all.  But to the eyes of the man of imagination, nature is imagination itself.”

– William Blake
