Clava Solstice

Midwinter sunset at Clava Cairns, near Inverness

Solstice greetings!  I’m repeating myself, as this image was taken a full 10 years ago and I used an image from this day in a post from that time.  Circles within circles of universal time, as the cairns of Clava symbolise.  Although I’ve certainly developed as a photographer since then (and as a more rounded human being) I’ve not seen Clava in such light since.

Natural rhythms and cycles deep lie within, like animals hibernating in hidden hollows.  Its good to take time to tune into this natural pace.  The passageway at Clava aligns with the midwinter setting sun, focusing that light into the inner chamber once a year. I’m imagining that as a metaphor, a focus for bringing the light of awareness into the heart space, where we sense our own spark, and the presence of connection with Source, God, All-that-is, the Great Mystery.

“When time is reduced to linear progress, it is emptied of presence.”

– John O’Donohue, ‘Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom’

Wishing you a Happy Christmas, filled with light, peace, and ‘presence’.

  1. A magical image Neil. It makes you take a little time out to think about those ancient humans and what thoughts were going through their minds in this place at such times of the year.
